Ali Pasha's Mosque - Sarajevo

engl.
Ali Pasha's Mosque was constructed in Sarajevo during 1560 - 1561 as a vakuf of Hadim Ali-pasha, the former Ottoman governor of the Budapest administrative district (budimski begler-beg) and the Bosnia Pashaluk.

History

The mosque was built according to the classical Istanbul architectural style. The dome covers the prayer area and three small domes cover the cloister. Because of its noble proportions it stands at the top of the scale of all sub-dome mosques that have been constructed in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the framework of the complex there is a domed burial site (turbe) with two sarcophagus of Avdo Sumbul (d.1915) and Behdžet Mutevelić (d.1915), Gajret activists who died in the dungeons of Arad. The Ali Pasha Mosque was heavily damaged by Serbian forces during the conflict of the early 1990s, especially the dome. The most recent renovation of the mosque occurred in 2004 and in January 2005. the commission to Preserve National Monuments issued a decision to add the Ali Pasha Mosque to the list of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Tara River

Bridge on River Tara

Coined the ‘jewel of Europe', this wild, turquoise blue river is a raging mass of water fed by the towering mountains of Durmitor National Park in Montenegro. The Tara River traverses along the border of Bosnia and Montenegro, with 30km of it in Bosnia and the rest belonging to the other side.
It rises from the mountain ranges in the northern part of Montenegro and flows 140km until meeting with the Piva River and forming the River Drina, one of the longest and largest rivers in the Balkans.
For eons the powerful flow of the Tara River has hollowed out a soft limestone surface, creating the sculpted form of gorges and chasms that we see today. Age-old earth erosion has created the 82km-long canyon, the second largest canyon in the world after Colorado.

Aside from nature lovers and fishermen, the river attracts a large number of adrenaline junkies. Rated at level 3-5, it offers some of the most intense and challenging rafting in Europe. A ride on one of the ‘real' rafts, logs tied together and guided by a massive wooden rudder, is quite an experience. There are, of course, rafting outfits that provide sturdy and safe rubber rafts with all the necessary gear. Most groups operate out of Foca (there are also several rafting agencies in Montenegro) and offer breakfast, lunch and overnight camping in their rafting packages.
